                                            SHEFFORD  VE2/ES-008, 515m, 2 points

On this day of april 28th my intention was to arrive a few hours before sunset.
Mount Shefford has two designated Sota summits. On the image above: the peak to the left is ES-008 and to the right ES-033.

A good portion of the way up the mountain can be made by car but the final ascent must be made by foot.

Since the leaves are not out yet i can still have a bit of a view from the summit.

The chosen spot will be a little lower among the trees in the forest where i am protected from the wind.

As soon as my station is installed i reach out to a few om's via the local repeater wich is right by me on the summit !!

I will use the FT857d coupled to my "tape measure" beam to ake a few contacts on FM VHF .J'utiliserai le Yaesu 857d  branché a la petite antenne directive fabriquée a partir de ruban a mesurer pour effectuer quelques contacts en FM sur VHF.

First station responding to my call on 20m is Pete VE2TOW who spots me on Sotawtch.

The following station will be GI0AZA from N.Ireland wich is a pleasant surprise ! i quickly work a few others from USA,Europe and locals.

Last contacts will be made on 2 metres band but this time in SSB mode with a few stations from the neighboring Monteregie region.

The sun is now below the horizon and i must pack up and hike down before total darkness.

Orford VE2/ES-013  843m,6 points

Today the weather was perfect for another Sota in beautiful Estrie region, temperature in the mid 20's celcius, sunshine with some clouds and hardly any wind.

I arrive on the summit after an hour's hike and since i am well in advance i explore the surroundings and take some photos.

Normally this summit would be pretty crowded because of a very easy access via gondola...but this is the middle of the week, the skiing period had just ended and the tourist season not yet started

I find myself an isolated spot and i install the station, i start off with a few calls on VHF but no answer... so on to 20m.
I'm right on schedule,by the first call i get 2 stations answering me and they both spot me right after our echange ( thanks Gary W0MNA and Rafael KP4RV) this will give me the kickstart for a run of about 25 minutes !

But the lack of propagation gives me a hard time copiyng some stations and on top of that i've got some interference coming from the blinking red light atop the tower near by.

I still manage to work 9 stations in the USA and 5 DX contacts all on 20m. 40m is quite calm,a quick peek on 17m reveals only one small signal in the background. On 10m i hear a CW beacon and try to answer back to a station calling from Argentina but... no luck.

After about an hour i put away the station in my rucksack, i follow a sign wich leads me on towards a few observation points and WOWW waht a view !:
Quel coup d'oeil !:

I have now an unobstructed view towards west so i try out VHF once again, this time i grab two stations 81 and 95 km away. Not bad with the HT and a small antenna !
This adds up to a total of 16 contacts:

I head down by the same path wich led me up.

In conclusion: mount Orford is really worth it, a relatively easy hike and beautiful views on the summit.

Acces by the ski station is free and sherpas (dogs or goats maybe !) are accepted as long as they are in leash !

Untill next time 73 ! 😎
73 a bientot !  😎

St-Bruno VE2/ML-001 200m 1 point

Today was my first activation of 2017,a beautiful sunny day with 18 degres c.

Mount St-Bruno is a very popular hiking destination since it is a provincial park, the parking lots were packed but very few people climb up to the summit so it was quite calm up there !

Les sentiers sont larges, propres et faciles.
The trails are wide, clean and easy.
The last part of the hike is steeper as we exit the trails and enter on to a ski slope leading to the summit.

Total time for the hike is about 30 minutes.

All the snow is melted away and the trees do not have leaves yet so this gave a better view.

Upon arrival i immediately proceeded to take photos. I was a little ahead of shcedule so after installing the station i quickly made 2 contacts on VHF with my HT.

Then on to 20m. The conditions were really bad but still i was lucky enough to make some contacts all across USA:
